During this month of September, at New Anthem, we’re doing a sermon series called, “Love Handles: Getting a grip on love, sex, and relationships.” The premise behind the whole series is a passage of scripture from Romans 12:2 that says, “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.” We’re trying to think differently about love, sex, and relationships.

But that verse has also sparked a new thought in me. So I’m a superhero/comic book lover. In fact, I’m trying to pass this trait on to my son and with the advent of technology, it’s become super easy. It’s crazy because with Netflix, I can now watch shows that I watched as a kid like, “The Avengers”, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”, and “The Incredible Hulk” with Leyton.

One of our favorites is, “Transformers.” So it’s hard not to read Romans 12 without thinking of Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Starscream, and Megatron. Just like they transform, God wants to transform you. Only once you’re transformed, you never go back. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

Now who wouldn’t want that? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to remind myself, “No, that old Landon is dead!” What great news! If you’ve never experienced that, then please contact us here at the office, but ultimately I think God is telling Christians, “If you want something you’ve never had, you must do something you’ve never done.”

With that in mind, what can you do differently today? Start a healthier lifestyle? Start a more passionate pursuit of Christ? Go after something you’ve always wanted? Whatever it is--pray like it depends on God and work like it depends on you. As Optimus Prime reminds us, “Fate rarely calls upon us at a moment of our choosing.”
