The new Russell Crowe film “Noah” is releasing this Friday, March 28th. Not only am I going to see it, but I’m paying for my entire church to go see it. This might come as a shock to some people since there is a lot of controversy surrounding the movie. However, all the arguments I’ve heard sound ridiculous to me.

Lets all keep in mind that the folks making and funding this film are not theologians. They are business men and filmmakers. Their job is to be creative and tell a compelling story so that they can turn a profit. I think we should celebrate the fact that they spent millions of dollars telling one of our stories!

Our job, as followers of Christ, is to redeem the movie by engaging folks in conversation about what the bible actually teaches in regards to this story. The movie “Noah” is a tremendous opportunity for us to remind people that God’s judgment is real. And just like God judged Noah’s generation, there is a time coming when He will judge ours as well.

2 Peter 3:6-9 says, “The world that then existed was deluged with water and perished. But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly. But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.”

God is an eternal, perfect, and holy God that gives people grace. We don’t know why, but I’m certainly happy He does. He gave Noah grace, and roughly 1,500 years later He gave the world grace through His son Jesus. What the ark was to Noah’s family, Jesus should be to us...a saving instrument in this great storm of life. Jesus came to this earth for the sole reason to live a perfect life, die the death that humans deserve, and raise from death, thereby conquering both sin and death.

Jesus is alive and well today, and one day will return and make this world right. In the meantime, maybe we could all show some grace to the men telling our story in hopes that we can be used by God to help lead them (and anybody else) to repentance...
