There’s a passage of scripture in Philippians 4:6 that says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”

This is peculiar because Paul tells us to not be anxious about anything. I wish the bible wouldn’t have said that. I wish we could be anxious about some things. For example, flying. I get a little nervous about being in a tin can 30,000 feet above the ground and the only thing that is holding me up there is the providence of God and aviation engineering.

Just for the record, I’ve met some of those aviation engineers, and let me just say that they didn’t instill a lot of confidence in me that their work was going to stay in the air. So I wish Paul would’ve said, “Try not to worry very often.” That seems more realistic.

However, he didn’t. And in Matthew 6:25-27 Jesus also says worrying is unnatural, unreasonable, unhealthy, and completely unnecessary. So the question I ask when I read this is, “Ok how do we combat worry?”

Thankfully Paul already told us. Prayer. When we pray, God promises to guard our hearts and minds. Ultimately, if it’s not worth praying about, it’s not worth worrying about.

Shoot, now I’m anxious that I’m worrying too much. I need to go pray...
